Republican senator says US prisons best in the world
AFP - A top US Republican senator on Sunday took pride in the US prison system, calling it the best managed in the world.
'It's very difficult to run a perfect prison anywhere, but the United States does that better than any other country in the world,' Senate Republican Majority Whip Mitch McConnell said during his appearance on CNN's 'Late Edition' program.
The senator was responding to charges by Amnesty International that since the beginning of the war on terror, the United States has created a system reminiscent of Soviet 'gulag' labor camps.
The United States runs the world largest prison system that houses more than 2.1 million inmates, according to the latest government statistics. That means that one in every 138 residents of the country is now behind bars.

I believe Senator McConnell was refering to prison management, as opposed to prison care; and he would be correct if China was excluded from the picture...The U.S prison system is indeed very profitable...Hooray for management! Thanks to the addition of consentual crimes such as prostitution and drug use, it has become the largest prison system on the planet. And the larger it becomes, the better it is for the few privileged investors, not to mention centralized law enforcement...
But I wonder how the not so good Senator would feel if he had to spend 364 consecutive days in one of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's chain gangs...I don't think Mr. McConnell would like that one bit...
Mike, if you had half a wit, you'd be dangerous...First of all, I wasn't defending any particular prison system. I was merely pointing out that the U.S prison system is a huge money making machine...The research is there...You need only to be able to read and comprehend...
And WHERE in my blog did I ever state anything regarding Soviet gulags?
By the way, torture and killings DO happen at the hands of correctional guards in prisons all over the U.S.
