67 killed as suicide bombers strike in Iraq

"SUICIDE bombers killed nearly 70 people in Iraq yesterday as police discovered a mass grave containing the bodies of at least a dozen people apparently executed by militants. A car bomb ripped through a crowded market in Suwayra, a town just south of Baghdad, killing at least 58 people and wounding dozens more. Another suicide car bomber killed nine police officers in a minibus in Saddam Hussein’s hometown of Tikrit.

The bombings were part of a surge of violence that has killed about 300 people - many of them Iraqi soldiers and police - since Ibrahim al-Jaafari, the prime minister, announced his new government on 28 April.
