A pair of car bombs exploded near government offices in the Iraqi capital on Thursday, killing 18 and wounding three dozen, and attacks against Iraqi security forces left at least eight others dead countrywide.

Near Kirkuk, seven gunmen riding in two vehicles fired on a police station shortly after dawn Thursday, killing five police officers and one civilian. Gunmen also hit police patrolling near the central Iraqi city of Baqouba, killing one officer and wounding three.
