The Wolf at the Door

"The Western media have, to put it mildly, been somewhat dismayed with the nomination of Paul Wolfowitz to be head of the World Bank.

"Wolfowitz’s nomination has to be seen in the context of the growing (and increasingly organised) opposition to the imperium’s economic assault led by Venezuela, India, Brazil and to a lesser degree, Russia.

"With the nomination of Wolfowitz [the U.S.] is hoping to enforce its continued control of the global economic system through the major lending institutions of the World Bank and the IMF and the continued rule of the petro-dollar. Frankly, I view it as a last-ditch attempt to maintain its hegemony in a rapidly changing world.

I must be one of the few people who think that a Wolfowitz presidency of the World Bank is in fact a good thing because a worldwide backlash against the Bank would be a very good thing. If a relative unknown or someone who could be taken seriously was named to head the World Bank, it would be much harder for people in the developed world and on the less well informed fringes of the social movements to get the message that it is nothing more than an instrument of American imperialism. With Wolfowitz at the head, this fact will be blindingly obvious. In other words, this will spare all of us on the left the effort of persuading people that the Bank is an instrument of American imperialism. Bush has therefore done our work for us. He has discredited the Bank in a single stroke - accomplishing overnight something political activists have been been struggling to do for years.

See above. Anonymous hit the nail, square on the head. Could we imagine thanking Bush for anything?

Oh yeah. The Bush boys have done us all a favor. That comment is so true, it deserves to be blogged in it's own right. So I will do that on wagnews now. Great comment. Also, nice new blog you got at:

Fintan, thanks for the compliment. I note that George Monbiot has recently published a similar (but much better!) commentary on the Wolfwowitz nomination. It's certainly a good feeling to have in some respects anticipated one of my favourite commentators by about two weeks.

By the way, have you noticed that the report into the Calipari shooting which we were promised within 3-4 weeks of the attacks still hasn't appeared? Do you think it ever will?
